The world has been growing, and our western civilization is entirely submitted to the idea of success. It’s hard to imagine an average business oriented person without certain set of skills, that would allow to develop in the right direction. Whether it’s corporate or small business, national agency or a small office, we tend to follow the same route – proficient communication is the key. But what’s the key to learning it, never mind using it?
It has been proven, the way we communicate can make it or break it. We create our element by the use of assets that come in our possession. Business, on the other hand, requires a specific set of skills, that allow us to empower our actions and lead to success, as such.
Introducing business English, we should think of it as not only the main mean of communication, but also a tool, which leads us to successful business transactions, in a nutshell.
Therefore, it’s crucial to make sure we know how to speculate the information we hold. In other words, when it comes to manipulating the opponent, it is extremely important to combine the knowledge of English with certain techniques of persuasion. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP).
Neuro means relating to the nervous system. The information we take in through our senses influences our neurological function. If we improve the accuracy with which we take in information, for example, we listen better and are more observant, so we are more open to our own and other people’ feelings. We also increase our ability to communicate effectively (both consciously and unconsciously).
Linguistic is about language. As we understand and are more aware of language – the words themselves as well as their structure and the way they’re spoken (speed, voice tone, rhythm), so we get better information for making decisions and communicating consciously and unconsciously.
So, you probably wonder why NLP works in business and how exactly it’s helping? It’s simple enough: learning to steer the conversation in the direction desired helps you get to the point and avoid misunderstanding, it also gives you the whole set of tools within the language YOU ALREADY KNOW to hit the spot. Now you get it, don’t you?! Exactly! (Oh, we’ve just used one of the NLP techniques, by the way).
Basically, one of the options is offering your opponent the idea of his further thoughts during the conversation. I say „I bet you’re wondering how exactly we are gonna do it?” And then, magically (naturally, in fact) your listener moves to the track you’ve chosen for him, leaving out his hypothetical doubts. See, easy peasy! (Oh my, I did it again!)
I always keep saying, Business English is neither an enormous vocabulary, nor a sophisticated method of using it. It’s all about the way you build your sentence, how you start and finish it, what collocations you use. Forget about grammar, forget about technicalities. It’s easier than you think, learning technique of persuasion with just practicing the right approach.
For instance, it’s only natural to avoid the word „BUT” in business. As we all know, everything you’ve said before BUT doesn’t matter. We can replace it with „on the other hand”, „yet”, „still”, etc.
Take a look:
• I spent the whole night cracking the project but I couldn’t make it on time.
Doesn’t sound very optimistic, does it?
There’s always a way to sugarcoat it and make it more attractive. Such as:
• I spent the whole night and I’ve done such an immense job, still I’d love to give it a final touch.
Here, the two opposites make a huge difference. ON TIME has gained negative coloring in business world, it creates the idea of time pressure. BUT doesn’t help it either, undermining the whole progress prior. FINAL TOUCH, on the other hand, is pure pleasure, makes you think of the cherry on the cake, doesn’t it?
There. It’s all about what makes your brain work left and right. Business English with a drop of science is open for those who seek flexibility within success. Work smart, not hard. That’s all, folks!
